Michael Eppler – Permanent vacation
Guest artists: Lisa Wölfel and Theresa Rothe
In 2024, the Schwalenberg Scholarship went to Michael Eppler (* 1987), who studied in Karlsruhe and lives and works in Leipzig. Michael Eppler first approaches new places through drawing and captures the atmosphere and special features, but also the parallels to other places in Germany. Drawings are a building block of Eppler’s work. He draws his immediate surroundings directly outdoors. In doing so, he often draws attention to supposedly mundane corners. He is not interested in postcard motifs, rather he wants to work out the essence of a place. Another large body of work is painting, which is created in the studio. Eppler has developed a process that he calls ‘foam paintings’ and which produces astonishing results that are more relief than painting.
