Künstlerkolonie Dachau – Blütezeit von 1880 bis 1920

Like no other art movement before it, plein airism brought artists into intensive contact with the landscape, the local population, their culture and living conditions. Thus, in the second half of the 19th century, artists’ colonies were established in places with particularly attractive landscapes. In the catalogue book for the joint exhibition “Die Künstlerkolonie Dachau 1880 – 1920” (The Dachau Artists’ Colony 1880 – 1920), the Gemäldegalerie (Picture Gallery) and the Bezirksmuseum (District Museum) present for the first time an overview of the great diversity of the artistic and cultural work of the Dachau artists’ colony, which goes far beyond works of fine art and also encompasses the fields of music and literature in a variety of ways.
