Impressions of the landscape. On the trail of the Schwalenberg artists’ colony / Landschaftsimpressionen. Auf den Spuren der Künstlerkolonie Schwalenberg

Artists have always had a special way of perceiving their surroundings. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, more and more artists left their studios to search for motifs in the great outdoors. This development can be linked to the general movement

of plein-air painting, which originated in France in the 19th century and in the course of which around 180 artists’ colonies based on Impressionism emerged throughout Europe within a short space of time.

Framed by an idyllic landscape and characterised by winding alleyways and picturesque half-timbered houses, Schwalenberg offered artists a variety of motifs. Even today, Schwalenberg and its surroundings offer artists plenty of inspiration.

The exhibition shows selected works from the collections of the town of Schieder-Schwalenberg and the cultural agency of the Lippe regional association of landscape and genre painting associated with Schwalenberg. New additions to the collection are also on display.

The adventure tour ‘In the footsteps of the artists’ colony’ can be booked as part of this exhibition (school classes).
