In the Dunes
Living Between Dune Top and Dune Valley

The exhibition In the Dunes tells the story of the untamed lands along the coast, shaped by the interplay of human and natural influences. It captures both the pristine and dynamic nature of this landscape and the activity of small-scale agriculture and the humble beginnings of human settlement. Additionally, the growing pressures of tourism, recreation, and water extraction in an era of declining biodiversity are not overlooked.

Over the years, artists have sought to portray this area in all its diversity. The exhibition showcases both the untouched beauty from the late Romantic era and modern works that highlight the power and splendor of today’s dunes. Contributions from artists such as Jacob Kerssemakers, Leon Holmes, and Carola Schapals are featured. Additionally, works from the period when Katwijk emerged as an increasingly significant artists’ colony are included. Paintings, watercolors, and drawings by H.W. Mesdag, B.J. Blommers, H. von Bartels, J. Toorop, and M. Liebermann are displayed in abundance.
