Sparkling – Landscapes by Coosemans and Verstraeten / Uitstraling – Landschappen door Coosemans en Verstraeten

Joseph Coosemans (1828-1904), one of the founders of the Tervuren School, was appointed professor of the landscape painting class at the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1887. He regularly brought his students to his beloved Tervuren and Genk to teach them the art of plein air painting. In 1891, 21-year-old Edmond Verstraeten (1870-1956) from Waasmunster joined the landscape class of the then 63-year-old Coosemans. The professor taught his students the techniques to capture nature, light and air on canvas, but gave them the freedom to find their own way. During this exhibition, you as a visitor will make a unique, almost 100-year journey through the eyes of the professor and student, from naturalistic realism to indigenous impressionism and luminism. The works are very diverse, but share a sparkling appearance that will make you walk out with a smile on your face. In addition to the work of E. Verstraeten, you will also discover other students of Coosemans, who followed in the footsteps of their master and left their own mark on landscape painting.
